LinkedIn Experiments with Video Trends to Boost Engagement

LinkedIn Experiments with Video Trends to Boost Engagement

LinkedIn is testing a new video trends feature aimed at encouraging users to participate in timely conversations through short-form video—drawing clear inspiration from TikTok’s viral trend mechanics.

How It Works

As seen in a recent post by social media strategist Lindsey Gamble, LinkedIn’s new feature introduces trending video tags that appear both in individual video clips and across the main feed. Tapping on a trend tag opens a stream of other user videos on the same topic.

Users are also prompted to “Add to this trend” via a call-to-action button, which launches the in-app camera so they can instantly record and share their take.

A Familiar Format, Reimagined for Professionals

This new feature closely mirrors the structure of LinkedIn’s Collaborative Articles, which use AI to generate questions and invite member responses. While those articles initially gained traction—largely due to the now-discontinued “topic expert” badges—they've seen reduced engagement since LinkedIn removed the reward system to combat misuse.

The video trends approach appears to be a fresh attempt to drive similar participation, but this time through a visual, short-form format that aligns more closely with current content consumption habits—particularly among younger professionals.

Will It Work on LinkedIn?

The success of this experiment will depend heavily on topic relevance and moderation. LinkedIn will need to ensure that video trends remain professionally focused to avoid veering into unrelated or low-value content territory.

Still, the concept has potential. Many professionals may be motivated to share their insights on trending business topics, and the ease of recording in-app lowers the barrier to entry.

Video Is on the Rise

LinkedIn reports a 36% year-over-year increase in video watch time, underscoring the growing appetite for video content on the platform. As professionals become more comfortable sharing knowledge and insights via video, features like this could help further increase content volume and engagement.

The video trends feature is currently being tested with select users in the U.S. No official word yet on a broader rollout.
