Toxic Links and Disavows in SEO
Are you grappling with the intricacies of toxic links and whether you should employ the disavow tool to combat low-quality, spammy links? Here are...
John Mueller from Google recently shed light on the topic of spammy backlinks and their influence on search engine rankings, providing valuable guidance for web publishers.
An individual raised concerns on Reddit about a noticeable surge in spammy backlinks directing to their website. They linked this influx to adverse effects on their site's search engine visibility and "overall credibility." The term "overall credibility" was not explicitly defined, suggesting it might relate to third-party site metrics like Domain Authority.
Here's what was asked on Reddit: "I’ve noticed a significant increase in spammy backlinks pointing to my website, and it’s negatively impacting my site’s search engine rankings and overall credibility. Despite my efforts, I’m struggling to effectively remove these spammy backlinks. Can anyone provide guidance or suggestions on the best practices and tools for removing spammy backlinks and restoring the integrity of my website’s link profile? Any tips or suggestions will be helpful."
Mueller's response highlighted Google's efficient handling of unwanted backlinks, suggesting that publishers need not take action against them. Surprisingly, he did not advocate for the use of Google's Disavow Tool, which is designed for publishers to specify links to be ignored by Google. Mueller recommended: "I’d strongly recommend focusing on other things – Google’s systems are really good at dealing with random spammy links, but – like users – they do get hung up on websites that aren’t awesome. Make your site awesome instead of chasing those links."
It's critical to understand that third-party metrics may not accurately represent how Google views a website. These metrics are better suited for comparative analysis rather than assessing a site's ability to rank. My SEO background, dating back 25 years to when Google displayed PageRank, has taught me that not even Google's own metrics are foolproof indicators of a site's ranking potential.
Majestic’s Topical Trust Flow scores offer insight into the type of backlinks a site has, providing a snapshot of the site’s backlink profile. Nevertheless, many experienced SEO professionals, including myself, caution against heavily relying on third-party "authority" metrics for SEO strategies.
