WhatsApp has officially introduced a new feature that lets users add music to their Status updates, bringing a more expressive and immersive experience to its Stories-style sharing format.
With the new update, users can now include short music clips in their Status posts, similar to features already available on Instagram and Facebook Stories. As WhatsApp explains:
“When creating a Status, you’ll now see a music note icon at the top of your screen. Tap it, and you’ll unlock a library of songs to pick from — whether it’s today’s top hits, something new, or the earworm that’s stuck in your head. Choose the exact part of the song that fits your moment — up to 15 seconds for a photo and up to 60 seconds for a video.”
This update allows users to select and clip their favorite parts of a song, adding an extra emotional or creative layer to personal updates.
The feature integrates Meta’s full music library, offering access to millions of tracks across various genres. This gives WhatsApp users a wide range of options for enhancing their updates—whether it’s a scenic vacation photo or a video from a night out.
WhatsApp’s music feature has been in development for several months. Reverse engineering experts had already spotted early signs of the update in the app’s code weeks ago, so this rollout was largely expected.
However, its official launch signals Meta’s growing investment in music-powered features, especially as TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains uncertain.
Meta has been actively expanding its music tools across its platforms to capitalize on TikTok’s engagement model. On Instagram, that includes:
Adding music to profiles
"Add Yours" music stickers
Music in Notes
Lyric displays in Reels
Music sharing in DMs
Now, WhatsApp joins the fold—potentially unlocking even greater engagement, particularly in regions where WhatsApp is dominant.
WhatsApp says the music feature for Status is rolling out globally and will become available to all users over the next few weeks. Importantly, like other parts of the app, Status updates remain end-to-end encrypted, and WhatsApp says it does not track which songs users choose.
“Your Status is end-to-end encrypted so WhatsApp can’t see what you share, and we don’t know which songs you add to your Status.”
Whether it’s for capturing a vibe, sharing a mood, or just having fun, this update adds another dynamic layer to WhatsApp’s most social feature.
